SUMMARYThis entry-level canoeing retreat is open to young men and women, entering 9th – 12th grade.   We will be driving from Minneapolis, MN to Crane Lake, then canoeing to a base camp from which we will explore nearby areas.  Participants should have a desire to deepen their understanding of the Theology of the Body (or be willing to be introduced to it); discussions will be started by Jen and other leaders but fueled by your questions and God’s promptings through our natural surroundings. We will be accompanied by a priest in order to participate in daily Mass and Eucharistic adoration.

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY:  Beginner to moderate.  We will canoe a few hours each day (headwinds and rain are always possible), with light hiking over rocky terrain at our destinations.   This is a “basecamp” style trip, meaning that we will be canoeing to our campsite and setting up there for the duration of our retreat; we will canoe to destinations daily, with time for frequent swimming and fishing.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:   On Monday, participants and their parent(s) can optionally plan to meet for 8am Mass at St. Charles Borromeo, then at 8:45 am in the parking lot of Into the Deep’s office (or the north entry in case of rain).   Check-in will take place outside (weather permitting) or in Suite 108.  Our anticipated return time will be 7 pm on Friday.

Our journey will be taken via 8 or 15-passenger vans and will be led by Jen Messing and 3 other leaders, including a priest (background and driver checks will have been completed).   Crane Lake is on the edge of Voyageurs National Park and is a little over 4 hours north of the Twin Cities; we will take necessary breaks along the way.

These trips are designed to be “family style” in that we share daily “chores” (meal prep, clean up, etc.), we wait for one another, and we share tent space (youth will be separated by sex with approx. 5 persons per tent; adults will be in separate tents nearby).

Please do not bring electronic devices; they will be collected (including cell phones) at the start of the retreat with the expectation that they will not be used unless there is an emergency (NOTE: this area has extremely limited/unreliable phone coverage and there are no charging options).   A group camera will be available if your usual camera option is your phone.  Youth are expected to participate in daily prayer times, Mass, and Eucharistic adoration.

Invite friends to join you or come by yourself – we look forward to meeting you!
